Ayrshire - The Home of The Open
It was back in 1860 that the Open Championship's first ball was struck at Prestwick Golf Club. In total, Prestwick hosted 24 Open Champonship's with the last ttaking taking plae in 1925.
Prestwick can be found on the Ayrshire coast in the south west of Scotland and just an hour south of Glasgow. This stretch of coastline is a mecca for golfers who search out not just the history of golf but also classic links courses. The names of Royal Troon and Turnberry are known world wide as both have hosted The Open and in normal years they would form the backbone of a links golf tour to Ayrshire, but this is not a normal year. Lack of availalbe tee times at Troon and Turnberry mean that the other, perhaps less well known courses feature in these "bounceback" tours.
Final qualifying for The Open Championships at Turnberry and Troon was regularly held over The Irvine Golf Club,Prestwick St Nicholas and Kilmarnock Barassie. Add to this the likes of Western Gailes, Glasgow Gailes, West Kilbride and the stunning new liks at Dundonald then it is easy to see why it woud be easy to spend a week in Ayrshire playing golf.
As Prestwick is less than a two hour drive to both St Andrews and Edinburgh combining Ayrshire with one of our other post COVID destinations will make for Scottish golf experience that will be surprising not just in quality but also price.
